A folded brochure carries more than a flyer in the same pocket-sized footprint, which is why teams in Raffles Place, Marina Bay and Tanjong Pagar still reach for one before a launch, a client meeting or an event. When the content is signed off late, the brochure has to be printed, creased and folded on a short schedule, and the fold is where most avoidable problems start.

This guide covers the decisions that matter: the fold type, the panel widths, the paper weight, creasing, finishing choices and the handover. For how a reader moves through the panels, see the brochure fold reading sequence guide.

What Should a Print-Ready Brochure File Include?

Send a print-ready PDF at the flat size with 3 mm bleed, images at about 300 dpi at final size, CMYK colour and embedded or outlined fonts. Set the panel widths for the fold you have chosen, and keep text at least 4 mm from every fold and trim edge. Artwork is checked before production, and a complete file avoids a round of corrections.

  • Flat size and bleed. An A4 tri-fold is set up as one 297 × 210 mm sheet per side, plus 3 mm bleed on the outer edges.
  • Images and colour. Use images at about 300 dpi at the size they will print, and convert the file to CMYK so you can see any colour shift before you approve it.
  • Fonts and effects. Embed or outline fonts. Use a PDF/X preset if your software offers one; it handles transparency and drop shadows consistently.
  • Safe margins. Keep text and logos at least 4 mm from folds and trim edges, so nothing sits in a crease or gets trimmed.

How Wide Should Each Panel Be for a Roll Fold or a Z-Fold?

Panel widths depend on the fold. In a roll fold, the panel that tucks inside must be slightly narrower so it can fold in without buckling; on an A4 tri-fold that is commonly 97 mm, with the other two panels at 100 mm. In a Z-fold, the panels do not nest, so all three can be 99 mm.

Fold Flat size Panel widths (inside to outside) Note
Roll fold (letter fold) A4, 297 × 210 mm 97 mm / 100 mm / 100 mm The tucked panel is narrower
Z-fold (accordion) A4, 297 × 210 mm 99 mm / 99 mm / 99 mm Panels are equal
Bi-fold A4 to A5, or A3 to A4 Two equal halves Keep text clear of the centre fold

A roll fold with equal panels is a common error. The tucked panel pushes against the fold, and the brochure will not lie flat. If you are not sure which fold your layout uses, say so in the brief and send a folded paper mock-up photo. Other fold patterns, such as the gate fold, are on the brochure printing page.

Which Paper Weight Folds Cleanly?

Brochures are commonly printed on 128 gsm to 350 gsm stock. Lighter art papers around 128–157 gsm fold easily. Anything above about 170 gsm is creased before folding, or the coating and ink can crack along the fold and show white fibres. Folding along the grain of the paper also gives a cleaner edge.

Stock Weight Creasing Feel and use
Gloss or matt art paper 128–157 gsm Not usually needed Light; handouts and event packs
Matt art paper 157 gsm Helpful under dark solid colour A common choice for corporate brochures
Art card 210–260 gsm Creased before folding Stiffer; a heavier, more formal feel
Uncoated paper 120–140 gsm Not usually needed Writable; datasheets and notes

On a short schedule, a lighter stock with a simple fold has fewer steps between printing and packing. A heavier card is still possible, but creasing adds a step, so mention it early.

Can Brochures Be Laminated or Specially Finished at Short Notice?

Lamination, spot UV and die-cutting each add a step after printing. Matt or gloss lamination can protect a brochure that will be handled a lot, but it adds time, and spot UV and die-cutting need tooling or set-up. On an urgent job, ask whether the finish fits your date, or choose an unlaminated stock that folds cleanly.

  • Lamination. Protects the surface and helps a dark design fold without cracking. Ask whether it fits the date.
  • Spot UV and die-cutting. Plan these on the standard schedule. Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days.
  • No special finish. A good stock with careful creasing often looks better than a rushed special finish.

Same-day and urgent printing available. Subject to artwork approval, payment, print type and production availability. Timing confirmed per job.

How Do Finished Brochures Reach Your Office or Event?

Island-wide courier delivery is available to offices, hotels and event venues across the CBD, and delivery is confirmed separately from production in the quotation. Give a named recipient, a mobile number and any building instructions, and confirm the delivery point and contact with the venue or organiser. Collection can also be arranged at Centennial Tower.

  • Packing. If brochures should be packed in counted bundles for an event, say how many per bundle.
  • Handover. Name one person to receive the delivery.
  • Collection. Collection by arrangement — tell us when you would like to collect and we will confirm the time.

If the same event also needs presentation folders or pull-up banners, put them in the same enquiry so the items can be confirmed together.

Worked Example: Tri-Fold Brochures for a Product Launch

Hypothetical illustration. Figures are assumptions for explanation, not a real transaction or advice. A team on Marina Boulevard needs 300 A4 tri-fold brochures for a product launch whose date has moved forward. The example follows the decisions the team makes in order: the fold, the panel widths, the stock, the brief and the delivery.

Step 1: Choose the fold. The design uses a roll fold, with the order panel tucked inside.

Step 2: Check the panel widths. The designer sets the panels at 97 mm for the tucked panel and 100 mm for each of the other two, on a 297 × 210 mm sheet with 3 mm bleed, and keeps text 4 mm from each fold.

Step 3: Choose the stock. The team picks 157 gsm matt art paper without lamination, which folds cleanly and suits the short schedule.

Step 4: Send the brief. The coordinator fills in the quote builder with the size, fold, stock, quantity and required date, and emails it with the PDF. Artwork, stock and capacity are confirmed. Timing is agreed when the job is confirmed.

Step 5: Arrange delivery. The coordinator asks for bundles of 100, gives a named recipient and mobile number, and confirms the delivery point and contact with the venue or organiser.

What Should Be Checked Before Sending an Urgent Brochure Order?

Before sending an urgent brochure order, confirm the fold type and the matching panel widths, the stock and whether it needs creasing, and any finish. Check the file for bleed, safe margins, image resolution and CMYK colour. Then give delivery details in the same message. Each point settled now is one fewer question once the job is booked.

  1. Fold and panels. For an A4 roll fold, 97 mm for the tucked panel and 100 mm for the other two; for a Z-fold, three equal panels.
  2. Safe margins. Text and logos at least 4 mm from folds and trim edges.
  3. File. PDF/X export where available, 3 mm bleed, CMYK, fonts embedded or outlined.
  4. Stock. A lighter stock for handouts; a heavier creased card for a more formal piece.
  5. Delivery. Recipient, mobile number and delivery point confirmed.

For multi-page formats, see the guide to same-day flyer and booklet printing, or read how availability is confirmed on the same-day printing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the inner panel of a tri-fold narrower?

In a roll fold, one panel folds inside the other two. Paper has thickness, so a tucked panel the same width as the others pushes against the fold and the brochure will not lie flat. On A4, about 97 mm for the tucked panel lets it sit cleanly inside.

What is the difference between a roll fold and a Z-fold?

A roll fold folds inward twice in the same direction, so one panel tucks inside. A Z-fold folds back and forth like a concertina, so no panel tucks inside and all three can be the same width.

Why does dark colour crack along a fold on thick paper?

On heavier stock, the outside of a fold stretches, and the coating and ink layer can split and show white paper. Creasing before folding gives the fold a groove to follow, which prevents most cracking.

Can I get laminated brochures on an urgent schedule?

Lamination adds a step after printing. Ask whether it fits your date. Same-day and urgent printing available. Subject to artwork approval, payment, print type and production availability. Timing confirmed per job.

Can brochures be delivered to an office in Raffles Place or Marina Bay?

Yes. Island-wide courier delivery is available. Confirm the delivery point and contact with the venue or organiser, or arrange collection at Centennial Tower.
